Badlands National Park - Sunset and Stargazing (Private)

5.0(26)7h

A once in a lifetime opportunity to visit the incredible Badlands; first in the afternoon and into a golden sunset - followed by the official National Park stargazing program. The best of both worlds, this tour allows us the view wildlife and the parks formations before the sun sets, and then taking on the park after dark! Because Badlands National Park is not surrounded by big cities or other major sources of light pollution, night skies in the park are very clear. After dark, visitors can see many of the night sky’s greatest hits: constellations, the moon, satellites, and airplanes. But the special darkness of Badlands National Park helps visitors to see even more like planets, the Milky Way, star clusters, nebulae, the International Space Station, shooting stars, and – very occasionally – the aurora borealis.

How Far Is Mount Rushmore From Rapid City?

Mount Rushmore is about 25 miles (roughly a 35-minute drive) southwest of Rapid City, the region's main airport and hub. Nearly everyone flies into Rapid City Regional Airport (RAP), rents a car, and uses the city as a base. From there, most Black Hills attractions sit within an hour of each other, so you rarely spend long stretches behind the wheel once you arrive.

Drive Times From Rapid City

Rapid City is the practical starting point for most trips. These are approximate driving distances and times to the major Black Hills attractions, rounded for planning. Actual times vary with traffic, season, and exactly where in each park you are headed.

Drive Times From Mount Rushmore

Once you are at the memorial, the rest of the scenic core is close. These approximate distances show how easy it is to chain Mount Rushmore together with Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, and Wind Cave in a single day.

Getting to the Black Hills From Major Cities

The Black Hills sit in a quiet corner of western South Dakota, so the nearest big cities are still a long day's drive away. If you would rather fly, Rapid City Regional Airport (RAP) is the closest airport, about 25 miles and 35 minutes from Mount Rushmore, with connections through Denver, Minneapolis, Chicago, Dallas, and other hubs.

Denver, CO

About 380 miles, roughly a 6-hour drive north on I-25 and US-85 through Wyoming. A popular fly-in alternative if RAP fares are high.

Sioux Falls, SD

About 370 miles, roughly a 5 hour 15 minute straight shot west on I-90. The main drive-in route from the eastern half of the state.

Both drives are long but easy, mostly interstate with plenty of fuel and food stops. If you are coming from Denver, the Badlands and Wall Drug make a natural stop on the approach from the south and east.

Rapid City to Mount Rushmore

The most common first drive of any Black Hills trip is the roughly 25-mile, 35-minute run from Rapid City to Mount Rushmore. The direct route follows US-16 southwest through the pines, but the more scenic option loops through Keystone on US-16A. Either way it is a short, easy drive that climbs steadily into the hills.

En route you pass a cluster of family attractions, from Bear Country USA and Reptile Gardens to the old-west storefronts of Keystone at the memorial's doorstep. Arriving before 9 AM beats both the parking crunch and the midday crowds, and it gives you softer morning light on the granite faces.

Mount Rushmore to Crazy Horse to Custer State Park (the Scenic Core)

The heart of the Black Hills is a tight triangle. Mount Rushmore to Crazy Horse Memorial is only about 17 miles and 30 minutes, and Custer State Park is a similar hop from either. You can string all three together in a single day without ever driving more than about half an hour between stops.

This is also where the driving becomes the attraction. The Iron Mountain Road and Needles Highway sections of the Black Hills scenic drives thread between the monuments with pigtail bridges, granite tunnels that frame Mount Rushmore, and pull-offs above the pine forest. Add Custer State Park's Wildlife Loop Road for bison, pronghorn, and the park's famous begging burros, and the short distances start to fill a full, unhurried day.

Wind Cave National Park sits right on Custer State Park's southern border, about 10 to 12 miles and 20 minutes from the Game Lodge area, so it is easy to tack on. See our Custer State Park and Wind Cave National Park guides to plan the pairing.

Adding Devils Tower or the Badlands as a Day Trip

The two big out-and-back day trips both run a little over 90 minutes each way. Devils Tower, in northeast Wyoming, is about 130 miles from Mount Rushmore (roughly 110 miles from Rapid City) and pairs naturally with Deadwood or Spearfish Canyon on the way. Badlands National Park lies about 95 miles east, an otherworldly landscape of banded spires that is best in early morning or at sunset, with Wall Drug an easy stop alongside it.

Here is the real traveler insight that trips up first-timers: visitors consistently underestimate how much time the Black Hills needs. Between the short but winding drives, the wildlife stops, and the sheer number of sights, most itineraries work best at 3 to 4 days. Do not plan to only see Mount Rushmore and leave. Give yourself room to add Custer State Park and at least one big day trip, ideally the Badlands, and the region rewards you far more than a rushed single-day stop ever could.

Ready to sequence it all into days? Our Black Hills itinerary guide turns these distances into a day-by-day plan, and the scenic drives guide maps the best routes between them.
